How Long To Learn Dutch?
Find out exactly how long it takes to reach your target Dutch language level with this study time calculator.
How This Dutch Language Level Calculator Works
This study time calculator is based on the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) estimates for language learning. The FSI, which trains U.S. diplomats and government employees, has determined that Dutch is a Category I language, meaning it's relatively easy for English speakers to learn.
According to FSI research, it takes approximately 750 hours of study to reach B2 level (upper intermediate) in Dutch from absolute beginner. The other levels are extrapolated from this 750-hour baseline with a factor of 2 increase for each level, making it exponentially more difficult to progress.
Dutch Language Level Progression
The calculator uses the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels:
- A1 (Beginner) - Basic phrases and expressions
- A2 (Elementary) - Simple conversations about familiar topics
- B1 (Intermediate) - Clear communication on familiar matters
- B2 (Upper Intermediate) - Complex ideas and detailed explanations
- C1 (Advanced) - Fluent, spontaneous communication
- C2 (Proficient) - Near-native proficiency
Study Time Estimates by Level
Based on FSI data with exponential difficulty progression, here are the approximate study hours needed for each Dutch language level:
- A0 to A1: 50 hours
- A1 to A2: 100 hours
- A2 to B1: 200 hours
- B1 to B2: 400 hours
- B2 to C1: 800 hours
- C1 to C2: 1600 hours
