Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Netjes Nederlands
🎯 Lesson Basics
All lessons are one-on-one private sessions conducted over Google Meet. This ensures personalized attention and allows me to tailor each lesson to your specific learning needs and pace.
Lessons are interactive and focus on practical Dutch skills you can use in real-life situations in the Netherlands.
You can choose from three lesson durations:
- 30 minutes: Perfect for focused practice, conversation sessions, or busy schedules
- 45 minutes: Most popular option for balanced learning and comprehensive practice
- 60 minutes: Ideal for in-depth lessons, grammar deep-dives, and extensive conversation practice
You're responsible for ensuring your technology setup meets lesson requirements:
- Reliable internet connection for video calling
- Computer, laptop, or tablet with working camera and microphone
- Access to Google Meet (no account required to join)
- Quiet environment with minimal distractions
- Notebook and pen for taking notes during lessons
Test your setup at least 15 minutes before each lesson to identify any issues.
If you arrive late, you'll receive instruction only for the remaining time. Lessons are not extended to compensate for tardiness, and the full lesson fee still applies.
Students arriving more than 15 minutes late without prior notification are classified as no-shows and the lesson will be marked as completed.
Your technical issues (internet outages, equipment malfunctions, software failures) do not qualify for rescheduling, refunds, or compensation.
My technical issues will be rescheduled at no additional cost or credited to your account.
Recording is strictly prohibited unless explicit written consent is obtained from both parties at least 24 hours before the lesson.
Any recording requests must clearly state the purpose, intended use, and storage arrangements for the recorded content.
Lessons take place on Google Meet. Click on the 'Meeting Link' on top of the first page of your shared document when the lesson time starts.
Google Meet is reliable, easy to use, and doesn't require you to download any software - you can join directly from your web browser.

🌷 Learning Dutch
Learning timelines vary based on several factors:
- Your native language: English speakers typically need 600-750 hours for fluency
- Previous language experience: Multilingual learners often progress faster
- Study intensity: 2-3 lessons per week shows fastest progress
- Practice outside lessons: Daily practice accelerates learning significantly
Typical timelines:
- A1 level: 3-6 months with regular lessons
- A2 level: 6-12 months total
- B1 level: 12-18 months total
- B2+ levels: 18+ months total
Dutch is considered moderately difficult for English speakers. Here's why:
Easier aspects:
- Many similar words (water, hotel, computer)
- Shared Germanic roots with English
- Relatively simple grammar compared to German
- No complex case system
Challenging aspects:
- Pronunciation (especially 'g', 'sch', 'ui' sounds)
- Word order in complex sentences
- Irregular verbs and verb conjugations
- Three genders for nouns (de/het distinction)
With consistent practice and good instruction, most students make steady progress!
Dutch and Flemish are essentially the same language with regional differences:
Similarities:
- Same grammar rules and sentence structure
- 95%+ of vocabulary is identical
- Same writing system and spelling
- Mutually intelligible
Differences:
- Pronunciation: Flemish is often considered "softer"
- Some vocabulary: Different words for certain everyday items
- Formality: Flemish tends to be more formal in some contexts
I teach Standard Dutch, which is understood and used throughout both the Netherlands and Belgium.
While many Dutch people speak excellent English, learning Dutch offers significant advantages:
Legal requirements:
- Permanent residence permits require A1-A2 Dutch
- Dutch citizenship requires B1 level Dutch
- Some visa types have language requirements
Practical benefits:
- Better job opportunities and career advancement
- Easier integration into Dutch society
- Understanding official documents and procedures
- Building relationships with Dutch colleagues and neighbors
- Accessing Dutch-only services and resources
The Netherlands has several regional dialects and accents:
Major regions:
- Amsterdam/North Holland: Standard Dutch with distinctive pronunciation
- Rotterdam/South Holland: Slightly different vowel sounds
- Brabant: Southern dialect with softer 'g' sounds
- Limburg: Strong dialect, almost like a separate language
- Friesland: Frisian is actually a different language entirely
I teach Standard Dutch (Algemeen Nederlands) which is understood everywhere and used in media, education, and business throughout the Netherlands and Belgium.
Essential Dutch vocabulary for beginners includes:
Basic greetings:
- Hallo (Hello), Goedemorgen (Good morning), Dankjewel (Thank you)
- Alsjeblieft (Please/You're welcome), Sorry (Sorry), Excuse me (Pardon)
Essential questions:
- Hoe heet je? (What's your name?), Waar is...? (Where is...?)
- Hoeveel kost dit? (How much does this cost?), Spreekt u Engels? (Do you speak English?)
Numbers and time:
- Numbers 1-20, days of the week, months
- Hoe laat is het? (What time is it?)
In our first lessons, we focus on these practical phrases you'll use immediately in daily life in the Netherlands.
Students typically find these Dutch grammar concepts most challenging:
1. De/Het articles:
- 70% of nouns use "de," 30% use "het"
- No clear rules - must be memorized
- Affects adjective endings and pronouns
2. Word order:
- Verbs go to the end in subordinate clauses
- Different patterns for questions and statements
- Separable verbs split in sentences
3. Verb conjugations:
- Many irregular verbs to memorize
- Perfect tense uses hebben or zijn
- Modal verbs change sentence structure
Don't worry - I break these concepts down into manageable steps with lots of practice exercises!
Effective ways to practice Dutch outside of lessons:
Listening practice:
- Podcasts: "Zeg 't in het Nederlands," "Easy Dutch Podcast"
- YouTube: "Learn Dutch with Kim," "Bart de Pau"
- Music: Dutch songs with lyrics (Stromae, Kensington, Caro Emerald)
- News: NOS Jeugdjournaal (news for children - perfect for learners)
Speaking practice:
- Read aloud from Dutch texts
- Record yourself speaking and compare to native speakers
- Practice conversations with Dutch friends or language exchange partners
- Use language exchange apps like HelloTalk or Tandem
Reading practice:
- Start with children's books and gradually increase difficulty
- Read Dutch news websites (nu.nl, nos.nl)
- Follow Dutch social media accounts
I provide personalized recommendations based on your interests and level!
